Ted Cruz announced the worst kept secret in politics this week…he is running for President. He did it at Liberty University to highlight his conservative and faith based values. Does he say the right things to excite the conservative base? Yes, but is it enough to galvanize the entire big umbrella Republican party? How about Libertarians, economic only Republicans, and Independents? Probably not. I can’t quite put my finger on it right now, but there is something about Ted Cruz that just doesn’t come off as genuine or presidential for that matter. But that seems to be his only problem. It’s a big one though, an image problem. He represents Texas, but does not seem like a Texan. He doesn’t have a drawl. I can’t imagine him riding a horse, drinking light beer, or shooting a coyote with a 30/30. Maybe this is more my problem than his. All of us have our ideal image of a President, usually shaped by our youth. If you grew up in the ’50s its Ike, ’60s JFK, the ’80s Reagan. Ted Cruz seems not quite ready for prime time. He would probably make a great number two on the GOP ticket, someone willing to be the bulldog of the party and let someone else, be presidential. I do believe he is in this for the right reasons and I really like a lot of his ideas, but for now I am going to keep shopping.
