Wise Pies Arena

So the Pit, will be known now as Wise Pies Arena.  UNM has been shopping the naming rights for the iconic basketball arena for years and now they finally got a buyer, albeit for a substantially lower price. UNM originally wanted 10 million over 20 years, they got 5 for 10.  Keep in mind the Pit renovation was 60 million; done in part to attract more NCAA tournament play, but last month UNM and the former Pit were shunned till at least the year 2020, to host any NCAA tournament action.  Will people still refer to it as the Pit?…of course. Will a snarky nickname for the Wise Pies arena be attached like, the Pie, 3.14, the Big Pepperoni, or the Deep Dish?…probably not.  Will we ever see naming rights being shopped to the other iconic arenas in college basketball like Rupp, Cameron Indoor, Pauley Pavilion, Gallagher Iba, or Phog Allen Fieldhouse?…probably not. Why? Because these schools don't need it. They all have donors with deep pockets who will not let corporate America sully the names of the revered arenas. So fans should not blame UNM for taking the "dough" from Wise Pies.  It will always be known as the Pit, even if it says Wise Pies.
