ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) The combination of dry, warm and windy weather has prompted the Lincoln National Forest in southern New Mexico to increase its fire danger rating. Forest officials say the Smokey Bear, Sacramento and Guadalupe ranger districts are experiencing conditions that warrant the high rating. Signs around the forest will reflect the new rating beginning Friday.
The rating indicates that all fine fuels, such a grass, can ignite easily and that unattended campfires are likely to escape and grow quickly.
The forest has yet to impose any fire restrictions, but officials are asking visitors not to park vehicles on dry grass and to make sure campfires are out. Spark arrestors are required on chain saws and offoad vehicles and all fireworks are prohibited.
