LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) The Los Alamos Historical Society is sponsoring a tour of the site of the first man-made nuclear explosion. The group is selling $150 tickets for a visit to the Trinity site in southern New Mexico scheduled for April 5. As part of the tour, visitors will see a restored house where nuclear core was assembled and visit the spot where the bomb was detonated.
The Manhattan Project exploded an atomic bomb around 30 miles southeast of Socorro, N.M., on July 16, 1945. Research around the bomb took place under top secret at Los Alamos, then an unknown town in northern New Mexico.
The bomb's creation was part of the WWII effort and the U.S later dropped similar bombs over Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
