POLICE: BEATEN NM BABY STILL IN CRITICAL CONDITION

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Authorities say a baby, who was beaten and bitten by his Albuquerque father, remains in critical condition. KOAT-TV reports that doctors Monday worked to save the 4-month-old who is listed at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Albuquerque police say Clarence Hawkins was arrested last week for severely beating his 4-month-old baby. Investigators say Hawkins told police he bit and squeezed the baby and questioned why the infant cried so much. According to police, a diagnosis showed the baby was also abused in the past and that the infant had a severe brain bleed.

Hawkins is charged with child abuse with great bodily harm and was ordered held on $300,000 cash or surety bond. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
