POLICE: NM MAN, BEAT, BIT 4 MONTH OLD INFANT SON

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A New Mexico man is facing charges after authorities say he bit and beat his infant son. Albuquerque police said Clarence Hawkins was arrested last week for severely beating his 4-month-old baby. Investigators say Hawkins told police he bit and squeezed the baby and questioned why the infant cried so much.

According to police, a diagnosis showed the baby was also abused in the past and that the infant had a severe brain bleed. Authorities say the baby had shallow breathing at the scene and later underwent emergency brain surgery.

Hawkins is charged with child abuse with great bodily harm and was ordered held on $300,000 cash or surety bond. It was not known if he had an attorney.
