ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico's largest jail is facing a deadline to ease inmate overcrowding. KRQE-TV reports that the troubled Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque has by Sept. 1, to come up with a plan to reduce its inmate population. If not, the Bernalillo County could face fines under a court settlement agreement.
Deputy Manager for Public Safety Tom Swisstack says the county is working to move about 300 inmates to other jails to meet the agreed deadline. Dozens of inmates recently were transferred to Sandoval County in June and July.
Swisstack says a jail in Estancia may add beds to help Bernalillo County, and the county is looking out of state facilities.
