2 NM POLICE AGENCIES ERASE ‘LIGHTS ONLY’ POLICIES

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Two major law enforcement agencies in the Albuquerque area are telling officers not to drive through red lights without good reason, and to do it safely if they do. KRQE-TV reports that the new policies are being implemented by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the Albuquerque Police Department. The changes eliminate “lights only'' where officers could turn on only their vehicle's emergency lights, without also turning on the siren, just to pass through an intersection's red traffic signals.

Now, officers must use lights as well as sirens when they're going through an intersection. Both agencies said the new policy is in an effort to reduce lawsuits and that they're following a nationwide trend.
