TAXPAYERS PAY FOR NM GOVERNOR’S EXERCISE EQUIPMENT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Gov. Susana Martinez has spent $2,378 of state money on exercise equipment for the governor's mansion in Santa Fe. Martinez told KRQE-TV that she's tried going to public gyms but said she couldn't concentrate on working out because people want to talk and visit. And she said she has limited time to exercise because of her busy schedule.

Receipts indicate the equipment was purchased in March 2012. It includes an elliptical machine, a NordicTrack stationary bicycle and a foam belt and gloves. Martinez said her husband also brought gym equipment from their home in Las Cruces and that the state-paid equipment will remain at the mansion after she leaves office.

The governor's previous improvements to the mansion include a $100,000 renovation of its public kitchen.
