PART OF U-S 491 CLOSED IN NORTHWESTERN NEW MEXICO

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) A six-mile stretch of a New Mexico highway connecting Gallup with the Four Corners area will remain closed for two weeks because recent heavy rain caused the highway to collapse. The New Mexico Department of Transportation says U.S. 491 is closed in both directions between Sheep Springs and Naschitti.

The department recommends that travelers use U.S. 371 between Thoreau and Farmington as an alternate route to reach the Four Corners area from further south in western New Mexico.
